10–14 Night River Cruises
Two rivers or one river end to end: the itineraries that turn a holiday into a journey.
Get Free Quotes on an ItineraryTen to fourteen nights is where river cruising starts to feel like a journey rather than a holiday. You cross borders by water, watch the landscape change, and have time for a few slower days. These are the main ways lines fill that time.
| Itinerary type | Typical route | What changes over two weeks |
|---|---|---|
| Rhine–Main–Danube crossing | Amsterdam to Budapest (or reverse), about two weeks | Dutch canals, Rhine castles, Franconian towns on the Main, the Main-Danube Canal, then Austria and Hungary |
| Lower Danube | Budapest toward the Black Sea, through Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania | The Iron Gates gorge, less-visited Balkan capitals, and a very different side of the Danube |
| Rhine plus Moselle or Main | Amsterdam to Basel with a Moselle or Main detour | Wine villages and smaller rivers added to the classic Rhine |
| France combinations | Seine and Rhône sailed together, with a high-speed train between Paris and Burgundy or Lyon | Normandy and Paris, then Burgundy and Provence |
| The whole Mississippi | New Orleans to St. Paul, around two weeks, on selected sailings | From the Deep South to the Upper Midwest: blues, bluffs and locks |
| Nile with Cairo | Around 12 nights, combining a Nile cruise with Cairo hotel stays | Pyramids and museums in Cairo, then Luxor, Karnak and Aswan by river |
Why Two Weeks Can Be Easier Than One
It sounds backward, but a longer itinerary can be more relaxing. On a seven-night cruise every day is full. Over fourteen nights there is room for afternoons spent simply sailing, for a morning off in a town you have seen before, and for the jet lag to fade before the trip is half over.
You also fly long-haul only twice. For travelers from the western United States especially, one long trip instead of two short ones can make sense.
The trade-off is stamina and budget. Two weeks of walking tours is a lot; plan to skip some excursions, and ask our advisors about lines with gentle-walking groups.

Choosing Between the Long Routes
First long cruise in Europe
Amsterdam to Budapest gives you the Rhine and the Danube in one go, with the Main in between. It is the most-sailed long route.
Been to Vienna and Budapest
The Lower Danube toward the Black Sea is the natural next step, with places many travelers have never considered.
Food and wine lovers
A French combination of the Seine and the Rhône, or a long Rhine-and-Moselle route, puts wine regions at the center.
No passport
A full-length Mississippi voyage gives you two weeks on America’s great river without leaving the country.
